I read the item in the North Carolina Coastal Review carefully, again. “If the Bill of Rights contains no guarantee that a citizen shall be secure against lethal poisons distributed either by private individuals or by public officials, it is surely only because our forefathers, despite their considerable wisdom and foresight, could conceive of no such problem.” And that, I take it, is the aim of literature, whether biography or history… It seems to me, then, that there can be no separate literature of science.” “The aim of science is to discover and illuminate truth. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. 'All that I write, ' Mansfield said, 'all that I am - is on the borders of the sea. All are revelations of the unspoken, half-understood emotions that make up everyday experience - from the blackly comic 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel', and the short, sharp sketch 'Miss Brill', in which a lonely woman's precarious sense of self is brutally destroyed, to the vivid impressionistic evocation of family life in 'At the Bay'. Many are set in the author's native New Zealand, others in England and the French Riviera. Innovative, startlingly perceptive and aglow with colour, these fifteen stories were written towards the end of Katherine Mansfield's tragically short life. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wolff is featured regularly in television, print, and internet media. There was, however, something going on with the recording quality in the third story. ![]() PERFORMANCE - The reader did a great job, especially performing the madness at the end of The Telltale Heart. Makes me wonder about Poe as a person and about his childhood. Poe also seems to have a propensity for his characters to have an evil eye or an eye missing, and his murderers all hide their victims' bodies behind a wall or in the floor. ![]() The stories all revolve around mentally disturbed main characters who commit some form of murder. Thankfully, the description of the cruelty was short and to the point instead of graphically described. The third was very good, especially the ironic ending, but it contains some animal cruelty which I didn't enjoy. The first is The Telltale Heart, which we've all read in high school, and it was my runaway favorite. To me it is the pinnacle of the comic book medium, and stands on par with many other great 20th century works, in my opinion.
